Experience

Picture
I have had my own private counselling practice for over 20 years and during that time I have helped men and women from all walks of life resolve issues and concerns that impacted on their well-being. I have worked with individuals and couples (straight and gay) looking at all aspects of their lives and relationships.

I have not always been a Counsellor. When I left school I joined the RAF and worked in Air Traffic Control moving around the country on various postings; at one time working with the Red Arrows Display Team.

I have worked in retail (food and clothing), again moving around the country for promotion becoming a senior manager before leaving to have my family. After I had my sons, as a single parent I decided to go back into education as a mature student and studied for my degrees. I moved from student to lecturer teaching in the Southampton Universities and finally to Research Fellow working at Oxford University. You can see my qualifications here.

I now concentrate on counselling. Apart from my private practice I also work for Employment Assistant Programs (EAP) providing counselling locally for employees of local and national companies.

I also provide training courses for other Counsellors

My approach to counselling
I am trained in different methods of psychotherapy that I can combine to best achieve the counselling outcomes we have agreed. These techniques can include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness.

I have undergone specialist training with Barnardo's and hold Approved Adoption Counsellor status. This allows me to work with the specific needs of clients who have been affected by adoption, including birth family, adoptees and adoptive family members.
Continued Professional Development
I undertake a minimum of 30 hour Continual Professional Development (CPD) per year.

CPD is defined as 'any process or activity that provides added value to the capability of the professional through the increase in knowledge, skills and personal qualities necessary for the appropriate execution of professional and technical duties, often termed competence.' - Professional Associations Research Network.
Membership of professional bodies
I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and bound by their code of professional conduct. I am also registered with UK Register of Independent Counsellers (UKRC) and Link Adoption Counsellors.
Counselling, Psychotherapy and Emotional Support to the people of Fareham, Portsmouth, Gosport and surrounding areas.
