We all go through ups and downs in our moods. Sadness is a normal reaction to life’s setbacks, losses and disappointments. Many people use the word “depression” to explain these kinds of feelings, but depression is much more than just sadness. While depression may be mild with a low mood that stops fairly soon, it can also be a consistent low mood that lasts for several weeks or more.
Depression can be a devastating illness that affects your body, your mood and your thoughts. It may affect many different aspects of life including sleep, eating habits, the ability to think straight or to function day to day in a way that you would like. You may feel you should be able to 'pull you together' but depression is not a sign of weakness or failure and may take some time to resolve.
A range of psychological interventions are recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of depression including counselling. I would always recommend that you consult with your GP as well as seeking counselling.
