Being angry isn’t a problem in itself - it’s how you deal with it!
Anger is a natural emotion that helps us deal with challenges in our lives. Anger can be a hugely useful emotion, but it can also be massively destructive. Feeling angry is part of being human. If you feel angry about something that is happening to you and you can deal with easily at the time, it can be over quickly. If something has made you angry in the past and you didn’t express your anger at the time – because you felt you couldn’t or didn’t want to – then that anger can get ‘bottled up’ or ‘suppressed’.
This can have negative consequences in the longer term – you may find that when something happens to annoy or upset you in the future, you feel extremely angry and respond more aggressively than is appropriate. So anger becomes a problem when it harms you or people around you; when you don’t express your anger, or express it at inappropriate times or in unsafe ways. It can also damage your health and your relationships. If you have a problem with your anger you probably already know it. As a counsellor I offer techniques we can explore that can enable you to manage anger in a better way. Talking about where your anger is coming from is also a good way of exploring negative emotions.
